What is Dry Eye Syndrome?

Dry Eye Syndrome currently affects over 10 million Americans. If your eyes are constantly dry and/or itchy, you may have dry eye syndrome.  Typically the condition is caused by a lack of or limited amounts of tears. Tears lubricate the cornea and  they do not consist of a proper balance of mucous, water, and oil, the eye will become irritated.

Dry Eye Syndrome Symptoms

Dry eye syndrome can lead to a number of symptoms - including irritation, itching, burning, excessive tearing, blurred vision, redness and discomfort after long periods of intensive usage such as watching television, using a computer, or reading.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Dry Eyes

There are several clinical examination methods that are useful for helping to diagnose and determine the severity of dry eyes.

From these tests an assessment can be made as to whether the dry eye condition is mild, moderate or severe and thus what type of treatment options may be best.

For those patients with mild to moderate dry eyes the first course of treatment may be to use unpreserved artificial tears as prescribed. Depending on the nature of your tear film deficiency, we may have you use a specific type of artificial tear that has different characteristics in terms of salt content and viscosity.
