What is Macular Degeneration?

Macular degeneration, most commonly known as age-related macular degeneration (AMD or ARMD) because it mainly affects people over age 65, is the leading cause of blindness in the world. Macular degeneration as part of the body’s natural aging process. There are different kinds of macular problems, however the most common is age-related macular degeneration.

The macula is a piece of the light-sensitive retina at the back of your eye. It's responsible for sharp, direct vision needed to read or drive. This disease causes the macula to collapse and degenerate, resulting in gradual or sudden loss of central vision.

When AMD does lead to loss of vision, it usually begins in just one eye, though it may affect the other eye later. Many people are not aware that they have macular degeneration until they have a noticeable vision problem or until it is detected during an eye examination. At Eye Associates of West Columbia/Cayce, we have highly-trained optometrists who can help diagnosis AMD in the early stages of the condition so that a proper program can be put in place to help treat any additional progression.
